MEET THE TEAM

Richard Chumbley took over the running of SMILE at the beginning of 2011, having supported the project in its first year.

Following an early career editing magazines such as Koi Carp, Scubaworld and Sunseeker Yachts' lifestyle magazine, Richard finally moved on when people realised he was afraid of water (he'd been fine with fish and tiny trees). As a freelance journalist he followed his passions and worked with a number of charities, becoming a Trustee of The Pavement and the editor of magazines for The Royal British Legion and the National Deaf Children Society.

In 2005, Richard took the plunge and launched Essential Local magazine as well as a one-man marketing agency 'for the small guy': advising local start-ups and providing small businesses and local organisations with extremely good value design, web design and printing services using a team of freelancers (www.essentiallocal.com). He was fed-up with service-providers charging too much to small businesses (who already have enough to deal with).

After living in Balham for 7 years, Richard recently moved to Wandsworth Common in a fit of adventure. He loves the local area and can't think why anyone would want to live anywhere else.

Richard is an inveterate volunteer and has been a samaritan, a magistrate, a volunteer for Kith and Kids and, locally, for Wandsworth BEST (careers assistance for schoolchildren). He is also the volunteer Chair of The Balham Partnership's marketing group.

SMILE is a natural extension of Richard's aim to support local charities and businesses... and his girlfriend wants him out of the house!

Liz Goodall founded SMILE in 2010 with Battersea residents Gayle and Erica when they decided they wanted to do something for the local community. Despite the heavy work commitments that have led to her handing the reins to Richard, she remains passionate about SMILE and will be actively involved throughout the year.

Liz has lived in Battersea for the last twelve years, spending most of the time working in the City. Liz decided that it was time to give something back to the real square mile, having enjoyed it so much over the years. She loves travelling the world, seeing new places and understanding how they do things, but she prefers coming back to SW11!

Monika Orman is a Wandworth based artist, graphic designer, web designer and illustrator. She received her MA in 1996 in product design from the Academy of Fine Arts. You can view some of her work at www.monikaorman.com

Having lived variously in Battersea Park, Clapham and Wandsworth over the last 5 years, Monika has got to know the area extremely well. She eats and drinks and shops Wandsworth... until its empty! Her favourite local pastime is picnicking and drawing in Wandsworth Common under the hottest sun she can find!
